Moonshine Flavors
Seven sweet Kentucky moonshine flavors — each one made from a real Appalachian family recipe at Southern Kentucky Distillery in Burkesville, KY.
Slate Fork Moonshine Flavors
Moonshine flavors have come a long way from the clear corn liquor that came out of Appalachian stills. Today, flavored moonshine is one of the fastest-growing spirit categories in the country. And at Southern Kentucky Distillery, every bottle of Slate Fork Moonshine starts with a recipe that's been in the family for generations.
Our lineup includes six sweet flavors at 20 proof — easy to sip, easy to mix, and smooth enough that they'll sneak up on you. If you want something with real heat, our Stump Water brings it at 100 proof.

Types of Moonshine Flavors
Moonshine flavors generally fall into a few categories. Whether you're new to moonshine or you've been sipping for years, knowing the main flavor types helps you find what you'll actually enjoy.
Fruit Flavors
The most popular category. Think peach, watermelon, apple, blackberry, strawberry, and cherry. These are sweet, smooth, and easy to mix. Most of our Slate Fork lineup falls here.
Dessert Flavors
Apple pie, banana pudding, peanut butter, butterscotch. These taste like dessert in a glass. They're richer and usually a little heavier than fruit flavors.
Cream Flavors
Cream-based moonshines blend the spirit with dairy cream for a smooth, liqueur-like drink. White chocolate, vanilla, and coffee cream are common in this category.
Spiced & High-Proof
Cinnamon, jalapeño, and traditional unflavored moonshine. These bring the heat. Our Stump Water at 100 proof is a classic example — no sweetness, just straight fire.
What Makes Slate Fork Moonshine Different
Most commercial moonshine brands use industrial recipes. Slate Fork doesn't. Our recipe came straight from a local founder's kitchen — a real Southern Appalachia family recipe that started as a homemade batch and turned into a distillery.
That recipe became the spark that started Southern Kentucky Distillery in 2022. We were the first distillery to produce legal bourbon in Cumberland County since prohibition ended here in 2016. And we're still making everything on-site in Burkesville, Kentucky — between Lake Cumberland, Dale Hollow Lake, and the Cumberland River.
Our moonshine flavors are sweet at 20 proof. That's intentional. They're made to be sipped, mixed, and shared without knocking you on your back. But don't let the sweetness fool you — they sneak up on you.
Our Moonshine Flavors & Signature Cocktails
Every Slate Fork flavor has its own personality — and its own cocktail. Here's the full breakdown of each moonshine flavor and the drink we built around it.
Dingleberry Moonshine
Yeah, the name gets a laugh. But the flavor is no joke. Dingleberry is our most talked-about moonshine flavor — a smooth, sweet purple grape taste that people keep coming back for. It's bold enough to stand on its own and sweet enough to mix into just about anything.
The grape flavor is clean and bright without being artificial. If you like grape soda or Concord grape juice, you'll love this one.
Signature Cocktail: Pa's Purple Passion
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Dingleberry Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Green Apple Moonshine
This one hits like biting into a Granny Smith straight off the tree. Green Apple Moonshine balances tart and sweet in a way that makes it one of the most refreshing moonshine flavors we make. It's crisp, clean, and goes down easy.
It works great as a chilled shot, but it really shines when you mix it into a cocktail. The tartness cuts through the sweetness of Sprite and gives the drink a nice bite.
Signature Cocktail: Granny's Sweet Secret
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Green Apple Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Watermelon Moonshine
Watermelon is one of those moonshine flavors that just works. Sweet, juicy, and light — it tastes like summer on the lake. We're located right between Lake Cumberland and Dale Hollow, and this flavor was practically made for a day on the water.
It's smooth enough to sip straight over ice. But the Watermelon Smash cocktail is where it really comes alive.
Signature Cocktail: Watermelon Smash
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Watermelon Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Strawberry Lemonade Moonshine
Sweet strawberry up front, tart lemon on the finish. Strawberry Lemonade Moonshine is the kind of flavor that doesn't taste like alcohol at all — and that's the danger. At 20 proof, it goes down like a summer drink and sneaks up on you later.
This is one of our most popular moonshine flavors with first-time buyers. It's approachable, familiar, and mixes perfectly.
Signature Cocktail: Twisted Strawberry
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Strawberry Lemonade Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Blackberry Moonshine
Blackberry Moonshine brings a deeper, richer berry flavor than most fruit moonshines. It's less "candy sweet" and more "just-picked-from-the-bush" sweet. You get that real blackberry taste — earthy, slightly tart, and full-bodied.
If you tend to go for darker wines or richer cocktails, this is the moonshine flavor for you.
Signature Cocktail: Midnight Moon
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Blackberry Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Party Peach Moonshine
Peach moonshine is one of the best-selling moonshine flavors in the country — and our Party Peach holds its own. It's smooth, ripe, and sweet without being syrupy. The peach flavor is front and center from the first sip to the last.
This one pairs well with warm weather, a good porch, and not much else to do.
Signature Cocktail: Porch Peach Kicker
- 1 cup of ice
- 1.5 oz Slate Fork Party Peach Moonshine
- 1 oz Stump Water Moonshine
- Sprite to fill
Stump Water — 100 Proof
Not all moonshine flavors need to be sweet. Stump Water is our unflavored, 100 proof moonshine — straight, strong, and traditional. It's the backbone of every Slate Fork cocktail recipe and brings the kick that balances out the sweetness.
If you want to know what real Appalachian moonshine tastes like before flavoring became popular, this is it. No sugar. No fruit. Just heat.
Frequently Asked Questions About Moonshine Flavors
The most popular moonshine flavors fall into three groups: fruit (peach, watermelon, apple, blackberry, strawberry), dessert (apple pie, banana pudding, peanut butter), and spiced (cinnamon, original high-proof). Fruit-flavored moonshine outsells everything else because it's sweet, smooth, and easy to mix. At Southern Kentucky Distillery, our top sellers are Dingleberry (purple grape), Strawberry Lemonade, and Party Peach.
Traditional unflavored moonshine tastes like a strong, clear corn whiskey — there's a noticeable burn and a slightly sweet grain finish. Flavored moonshine is a different experience. It's much smoother and sweeter, closer to a flavored liqueur. Our Slate Fork flavors at 20 proof are sweet and approachable. Our Stump Water at 100 proof delivers the traditional moonshine kick that old-timers remember.
Moonshine proof varies a lot. Traditional homemade moonshine could hit anywhere from 80 to 190 proof. Commercially made flavored moonshine is usually lower — between 20 and 70 proof — which makes it smoother and easier to drink. Slate Fork flavored moonshine is 20 proof. Our unflavored Stump Water is 100 proof.
Yes. Commercially produced moonshine is completely legal to buy in Kentucky and most other states. A few ways. You can sip it chilled straight from the bottle, pour it over ice, mix it with Sprite or lemon-lime soda for a quick cocktail, or get creative with your own recipes. At Southern Kentucky Distillery, every Slate Fork flavor has a signature cocktail that mixes the flavored moonshine with our 100 proof Stump Water and Sprite over ice. The sweetness and the heat balance each other out.
Dingleberry Moonshine is a signature flavor from our Slate Fork Moonshine line here at Southern Kentucky Distillery. The name gets a reaction — but the taste is what keeps people buying it. It has a smooth purple grape flavor, sits at 20 proof, comes in a 750ml bottle, and is the star ingredient in our Pa's Purple Passion cocktail.
