Bourbon Barrel Investment

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about owning a barrel at Southern Kentucky Distillery. Still have questions? Use the form above — our team will get back to you fast.

After distillation, you purchase a New Fill barrel — a freshly filled, charred white oak barrel — directly from SKD. Your barrel is immediately placed in one of our federally bonded warehouses to begin aging. You receive a warehouse receipt showing your barrel's serial number and warehouse location. The bourbon then ages and increases in value over time. You're welcome to visit your barrels in person with advance notice.
A New Fill barrel is $1,600 (Mash Bill RB22 + WB21). After purchase, a Barrel Storage and Service Agreement covers your carrying costs while the barrel remains in our warehouses:

Monthly storage: $3.00 per barrel
Monthly insurance: $1.00 per barrel
Move-in / move-out fee: $10.00 per barrel

That's roughly $48 per year in carrying costs — a low overhead for an appreciating tangible asset. Prices and terms are subject to change; contact Junior or Kevin for current details.
We recommend a 4–7 year maturation period. This is the window where bourbon develops its most complex flavors and typically commands premium prices on the market. That said, SKD is actively developing exit markets for 2-year, 4-year, and 7-year specialty bourbons, so investors have options at multiple points in the aging cycle — not just one.
You have full control over when and where you sell. Your three primary options are:

1. Sell back to SKD — for use in our branded products including Long Ridge High Rye, Turby's Cherrywood Bourbon, or Broadhead Bourbon.
2. Sell on the wholesale market — to another distillery or brand that needs aged bourbon to meet demand. The wholesale market is cyclical and can offer strong returns during peak periods.
3. Sell to a private buyer — collectors and investors buy aged barrels directly. A broker can facilitate this, though that adds cost.

It is 100% your decision where and when to sell.
Unlike brokers or sellers who have no brand, SKD is actively building demand for its own bourbon — which directly increases the value of barrels aging in our warehouses. Our Long Ridge High Rye earned a Double Gold Medal at the 2025 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and was named one of the world's best small-batch bourbons by Forbes Magazine. That kind of recognition creates real retail pull. As our brands grow, the market for our maturing barrels grows with them.
Buying direct from SKD eliminates broker fees and puts you in a direct relationship with the people who manufacture, age, and potentially bottle your investment. Some sellers in the wholesale market have no plan to buy barrels back — leaving investors without a clear exit. SKD's entire brand strategy is built around increasing the demand for the bourbon we produce. Your investment and our business goals are aligned from day one.
Bourbon barrel investing is non-correlated with traditional financial markets — meaning its value isn't typically driven by interest rates, stock market swings, or economic cycles the way equities or bonds are. The global whiskey market is valued at $72 billion USD with projected growth of 6.7% (Global Market Insights). Bourbon is a tangible asset stored in a regulated, federally bonded warehouse — it doesn't disappear in a market downturn. That said, barrel investing carries its own risks. We always encourage investors to consult with a professional advisor.
SKD is a serious production facility. We currently produce beyond 25 barrels per day on a single shift, barreled our 10,000th barrel at the end of 2024, and have the capacity to produce over 18,000 barrels per year. We own 4 bonded storage warehouses and are building a 19,000-barrel warehouse behind our distillery. Whether you want to purchase one barrel or one hundred, we're equipped to handle it. Reach out to Junior Cecil or Kevin Dailey to discuss your specific goals.
